Slugs [Ugh]...

Slugs can be a destructive force in our gardens, but to help with getting rid of  these destructive little pests, here are some solutions.

Mechanical:  Seaweed, just put some around the edges of your beds and they will keep the slugs away.  Must be the combination of sea salt and sand. Another method that seems to work is a sand barrier on the bed edges. Diatomaceous earth is another method that seems to have positive results. The old fashioned "beer" trap works as well, but remember the slugs get some, and in Western climates put a roof on your trap or the rain will wash away the beer.

Another good method is to put aluminium edging around your most precious crops, then bend the top edge down at least an inch. This keeps the slugs from crawling up and over and eating its way through your lettuce.

Chemical: Slug bait, put in coffee can with holes punched in so only slugs can get in. Later's and Safer's now has a non-toxic [to humans and animals] slug bait that works really well.

A company in England has developed a nematode for slug control, but as they have not found the nematodes in slugs in North America yet that particular product will not be available in Canada for some time. Sorry, we are all waiting for that day.
