Lawn Garden Pest Destroyer - Nematodes

"These ‘todes won’t turn into your prince, but they will eat your weevils"

Very few gardeners know that beneficial nematodes will attack over 250 soil pests that are commonly found in gardens and lawns. Nematodes are small round worms that penetrate the outer skin of the soil pest and then secrete a bacteria that kills the pest within 48 hours. In larger pests such as cutworms and grubs, the nematodes will reproduce and start a resident population. Common pests that nematodes are very effective against include weevils, fleas, European chafer, cutworms, wireworms, rootworms grubs, cranefly larvae, leatherjackets and numerous other soil dwelling pests.

One packet of 5 million nematodes will treat approximately 75 square meters (approximately 825 sq ft). It is best to moisten the area to be treated. This can be done by hand watering or using a sprinkler. Mix the packet of nematodes into approximately ½ gallon of water and rinse the packet out several times to remove all the nematodes. Once you have added your package of nematodes to the water you must keep the solution agitated to ensure your nematodes are evenly dispersed in the area to be treated. Otherwise the nematodes will settle quite quickly at the bottom of your mixing container. Stir the solution every five or ten minutes until you are ready to apply.

You can dilute the water/nematode mixture with enough water to treat the total area. This diluted mixture can now be applied simply using a garden watering can, or by using a hand sprayer, or by using an irrigation system. When using sprayers or irrigations systems, be sure to remove any filters. It is best to apply the nematodes in the early morning or evenings. Please apply the nematodes within 2 hours of initially mixing the nematodes with the water to avoid drowning these beneficial creatures.

It is neccessary to apply your outdoor nematodes in the spring time as soon as the soil temperature warms up to the point that there is no longer the threat of frost. This varies depending on the weather as on the west coast and throughout canada the temperatures are not that consistant. Usually the time to apply is March-May. This first application will take care of any soil pests in their larval stage that have overwintered.  The nematodes target a very wide variety of harmful lawn pests. Different pests show up at different times during the growing season so it is effective to apply nematodes as needed (if you are seeing plant damage) throughout the year until september or october when you would apply the last application before the ground freezes once again. It is a misconception that you only apply nematodes in the spring and fall. During the summer, if you are needing to apply and it is hot, dry and sunny, wait until the evening to apply this product or wait for an overcast day. If the soil or medium you are using to plant with is dry, water the area first to add moisture.

**NEW PRODUCT** SAFE-GREEN NEMATODES

Safe-Green Nematodes are beneficial entomopathogenic nematode, Steinernema Carpocapsae, used for the treatment of over 250 lawn, turf and soil pest insects by attacking the larval stage of the insect before they have a chance to become adults. This beneficial nematode is a natural and effective alternative to chemical pesticides. These nematodes have no negative or harmful affect on other non-target beneficial species such as ladybugs, and other helpful garden insects. More importantly nematodes are safe to use around children and animals.

Quick results - These small beneficial round worms are fast acting. They kill their target pests within 48 hours of application by penetrating the outer skin of the soil pest and then secreting lethal bacteria.

Results that last - In larger pests such as cutworms and grubs, the nematodes will reproduce and start a resident population.

Easy & safe to use - Both foliar spraying and irrigation are possible methods of application depending on the target pests.

Long shelf life - A new advanced patented gel keeps nematodes fresh, even without refrigeration.

This product can be used to control a broad range of soil inhabiting pest insects including but not limited to:

-Fleas, craneflies (leather jackets), european chafer, Cranberry girdler, common cutworm
-Turnip moth, onion maggot, rootworms, tobacco cutworm, gooseberry budworm
-Cabbage webworm, small white butterfly, peach pyralid moth, Beet army worm, fungus gnat

Safe-Green nematodes are effective throughout the growing season, but must be applied from late July to early September to control craneflies (leather jackets) in their susceptible stage.

Preparation and Application

1. In order to separate nematodes from the powder put entire contents of the bottle in a container (2-3L) of water at 15-20 C. Stir the solution well and let the sediment settle to the bottom. Nematodes will be in the water, not the sediment.
2. Pour the solution containing nematodes into a separate container, and discard the sediment. This concentrated solution can now be diluted into maximum 200L of water.
3. Stir the solution well so the nematodes do not settle at the bottom.
4. Apply the solution with a watering can, through a hose end sprayer, backpack sprayer or pump sprayer.
