Nematode of Vine Weevil

Kraussei-System is able to control rapidly and effectively vine weevil because of the way it works. When applied to the compost, the nematodes seek out larvae already present in the root zone. They enter the larvae through natural body openings or by penetrating directly through the cuticle. Once inside, they release symbiotic bacteria. These bacteria multiply rapidly and produce a toxic compound which kills the larva. An infected vine weevil larva turns to a pale yellow color and dies after about two days. The nematodes reproduce inside the larva and as it decomposes, a new generation is released and moves off in search of new prey.

Kraussei-System contributes to a rapid and effective control of vine weevil provided that:

  • It is used curatively, i.e. treatment should be applied when black vine weevil larvae are present and active;
  • The soil, potting peat or compost media are moist;
  • The soil, potting peat or compost media temperatures are between 5 °C and 30 °C for at least two weeks after application;
  • The spraying pressure does not exceed 20 bar. The optimum pressure is between 5 – 10 bar.

In practice for most crops, this means that there are two periods in which Kraussei-System should be used:

  • Treatment between August and November will be effective against larvae which have developed from eggs laid earlier in the year, and before significant damage is done;
  • Treatment between March and May will be effective against larvae which have escaped an autumn treatment. The nematodes will penetrate the body of the vine weevil larvae before they pupate.

Autumn and spring applications will greatly reduce the number of pupating larvae as well as the number of emerging adult weevils. It should be noted that Kraussei-System remains effective for about six weeks after application. Larvae resulting from eggs laid after this time will not be adequately controlled. In heated glasshouses where all stages of the vine weevil may occur at any time, Kraussei-System provides control all year round.
